The most important tip here is, remember, The
rules keep changing. This is especially true regarding
search engines, so that is where we'll start.
There are, of course, several search engines and directories
that you'll want to submit your site to. Just don't expect your
submission to appear right away. It's more like, maybe in a few days,
maybe in a few months, maybe never. Learn their rules before
you submit again. Additional submissions can get you banned.
Be sure you check out
Search Engine Watch. It is probably the most comprehensive
information resource on the subject. Even so, there are more tips
you should follow.
You can get listed on several major search engines
by going through the back door. Yahoo and several others get their
listings from the Inktomi database. Get listed on that database by
submitting your site to Canada.com. They will have you up in three
days or less. By default, Yahoo will have you listed, too.
Also go to www.dmoz.org. This is the Open Directory Project begun
by several key players from Netscape. It's a snap to get listed and
their database is the one Lycos and Hotbot use.
By all means RE-register with
Alta Vista--three or
four times. Alta Vista has several databases they rotate (which
may explain why your site is listed high one minute and not the next).
Submit your URL every week for four weeks to cover the entire system.
